Hattye M. Thomas Yarbrough was born August 18, 1921 in Hardeman County, Tennessee. As a young woman during World War II, she began collecting mementos from the "negro" soldiers. She created a scrapbook from this era which was accepted into the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture in 2016. She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Lane College in Jackson, TN on May 13, 1945 and she earned her Master of Library Science Degree from George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, TN on August 20, 1966. A devoted wife, teacher, children's basketball coach, librarian, community volunteer, and artist, Mrs. Hattye has been an active part of Tipton County history for many years.
